Background
State law requires City Council to approve the number of positions for each classification (e.g., positions within the Department), as well as the Compensation Plan for the Police personnel who are subject to the State’s Civil Service statute provided under Chapter 143, Local Government Code.

City Council approved an Ordinance on September 28, 2026, adopting the Compensation Plan for the Police Department’s sworn personnel, effective October 5, 2026. The Ordinance also adopted the number of positions effective October 5, 2026, which includes the addition of the following positions for FY 2026-27:

One (1) Police Officer
One (1) Police Lieutenant
Assistant Police Chief title has been updated to Appointed Assistant Police Chief
